Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI creates images with amazing contrast for anatomical details of heart structures. Positron emission tomography or PET creates images which explain the function of the heart. PET images are highly sensitive to small biochemistry and metabolic changes. Combining the two types of images provides a unique and powerful tool to study the anatomy and function of the heart which will allow a better understanding of healthy hearts as well as hearts affected by many disorders. Traditionally PET/MR imaging of the cardiovascular system has focused on assessment of cardiomyopathy, viability, inflammation, and coronary artery disease. As the combined techniques advance, they have the potential for molecular imaging.
