Using sustainable in situ bioremediation technologies to clean up sites that are contaminated with industrial chemicals requires a thorough understanding of the activities of groups of beneficial microbes that work together to degrade these contaminants. High-throughput sequencing of microbial DNA can provide valuable information about the diversity and potential functions associated with contaminant site remediation. SiREM (www.siremlab.com) is a business in Guelph (Ontario) that provides testing and products in support of site cleanup. Under the proposed project, University of Waterloo researcher Dr. Josh Neufeld will provide his expertise in analyzing microbial communities to help SiREM identify a suitable protocol for providing their clients with an automated microbial analysis pipeline related to in situ site cleanup. By solving this challenge of SiREM, the proposed research will help SiREM produce a cleaner environment through better management of microbial communities to clean up contaminated sites sustainably.
