3M Canada's new graphene-like-carbon (GLC) coatings is a novel thin-film coating that has provided a pathway to reduce the contact resistance in Li battery applications. The materials properties, specifically, the electrical anisotropy of nano-graphitic layers and the softness of graphite enables this performance improvement. The development of this novel carbon-based electrode will create opportunities for sensor applications that align with 3M Canada's interests for using this technology in the health care markets. In the proposed Engage program with Professor Wong at the University of Waterloo, the role of the GLC coated on metal contact pads will be evaluated by directly comparing GLC coatings with metallic contacts. In the same study, we will compare commercial conductive ink performance on GLC coated pads as well for understanding the effect of the GLC coating on contact performance. Together, we will evaluate the electrical characteristics of the GLC material for applications in flexible x-ray medical image-sensor arrays.
