Fossil fuel production and transportation are the two largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, accounting for approximately half of Canada's total GHG emissions. Local air pollution from transportation also poses significant environmental and health risks for Canadians, especially for the 80% of the population who live and work in urban areas. Specifically, the trucking industry employs nearly 400,000 Canadians, burns billions of gallons of fuel annually (105.5 M US gallons of diesel per day), and produces tremendous quantities of harmful emissions (42.5 MtCo2e in 2013). There is currently a market of about 464,000 heavy duty class 8 vehicles registered in Canada. With appropriate policy, technology, and investment, Sustainable Development Technology Canada believes that energy consumption and GHG emissions in trucking can be cut in half by 2030. Hydra Energy's waste hydrogen fueled class 8 truck concept represents a viable option to contribute to this objective.
