Tailings consolidation mechanisms

The nature of tailing is such that they hold water and resist its expulsion. The focus of many tailing management technologies concentrates on their ability to promote water expulsion and clay "consolidation". With this project, the investigating team measures tailing structure and water expulsion as a function of external loading. Three non-destructive techniques are implemented: x-ray tomography measures density and porosity distribution; Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry measures water distribution in different pore sizes; Electromagnetic Sweeps measures conductive material interacting through conductivity and dielectric constant variability with EM frequency. The techniques are applied in standard tailings samples provided by AITF. The results are modelled using a kinetic model that incorporates the experimental findings.
