This project aims to advance the technology relevant to a novel nucleating and reinforcing agent for polylacticacid (PLA) that was recently developed by the applicant. This 100% bio-based additive (biofiller) addresses thelimitations of existing PLA-modification technologies and has the potential to provide a more cost-effectiveand efficient solution. Specifically, we have proven that our biofiller, when combined with PLA (which is abio-based and biodegradable thermoplastic with a significant and growing market), significantly improves itsprocessability and properties, including crystallization kinetics, degree of crystallinity, toughness, and rigidity. These attributes readily translate to enhanced heat resistance of PLA products and reduced processing cycletimes, which are highly sought by the bioplastics industry. In this project we will demonstrate that thistechnology can meet the specifications targeted by PLA processors and that the adoption of this technology willbenefit their businesses in a tangible manner, thus strengthening the opportunities for licensing. This projectwill also serve to broaden the patent claims of our provisional patent application.
