This new collaboration between Aeponyx, a rapidly growing Canadian company that offers disruptivetelecommunication technology, and the Université de Sherbrooke nanomaterial team, led by Professor RichardArès will explore innovative ways to exploit the properties of a new kind of nano-composite material forintegration within the company's products. Graphene-coated porous semiconductors are made of a variety ofsemiconductors, whose mesoporous structures are obtained by an electrochemical process. The pore walls arecoated with a graphene-like layer of a few atoms thick - a process that radically changes the properties of thehost semiconductor, forming a composite. The electro-optical properties of the nanocomposites remainunknown. This project aims to measure these properties and explore the use of the nanocomposites in thecontext of the telecommunication applications. The target application will be to integrate the nanocompositewithin the current Aeponyx fabrication process for their optics platform that combines MEMS with passivesilicon nitride waveguides. An eventual successful integration would mean that Aeponyx's product wouldbecome fully monolithic and be produced at radically reduced cost. The project will use the know-how developed at USherbrooke for both the nanocomposite synthesis and forsemiconductor-based nanofabrication, along with Aeponyx's strong knowledge of the device fabricationchallenges and related application.
