Advanced BioCarbon 3D Ltd (ABC3D) has developed a process for extracting high purity lignin from woodproducts. It is felt that the ABC3D Lignin (ABC3DL) may be a good candidate feedstock for the formation ofcarbon fibres. However, there are several challenges posed by the fibre formation that the ABC3DL productdevelopers must overcome. The University of British Columbia (UBC) has a wide range of electrospinningfacilities in the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AFML). By combining the expertiseof UBC AFML staff and nanofibre processing facility we can reduce the design cycle time and improve thelevel of innovation. In this program, we propose to combine ABC3D's bio-refinery technology with theknow-how and capabilities in fibrous materials in AFML at UBC to explore the feasibility of lignin as a rawmaterial for carbon fibre production.
