Redefining Colostrum and Transition Milk

The Saskatoon Colostrum Company Limited (SCCL) specializes in providing quality colostrum to dairy andbeef producers nationally and internationally. The main metric to assess colostrum quality is immunoglobulincontent, however there are hundreds of additional bioactive molecules such as oligosacchardies in colostrumand the first milkings of lactation that may improve the health of calves but have yet to be uncovered.Therefore, the objectives of this project are to characterize the oligosaccharides in colostrum and transitionmilk. Essentially, a blueprint of the prebiotics that should be fed to the calf to develop the gastrointestinaldevelopment and consequently health status, will be determined. The results of this study will provide insightsinto colostrum and transition milk management practices and highlight the value prebiotics in calf feedingregimens.
