The tiny magnetic moments of individual electrons and nuclei -- spins -- offer a promising platform for encoding information in powerful future computers that operate using the laws of quantum mechanics. The central challenge to realizing such devices is the difficulty of developing fast, controllable logical operations between spins without sacrificing their coherent quantum character. The proposed research program will explore mechanisms for creating such connections between solid-state spins by exploiting the optical and magnetic properties of defects in a crystalline solid. Additionally, this research will impact near-term applications using spins for precision magnetic sensors.
