A plethora of anecdotal evidence points out to the positive benefits of incorporating copper into wearable accessories or drinking**water stored in copper containers in promoting an anti-inflammatory state to alleviate arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. In**fact, while some studies have shown anti-inflammatory effects of copper in animal models and in vitro, other studies have shown**that copper can behave as an inflammatory agent and increase the levels of damaging free radicals. Recently, CuTEC yarn, a bioengineered**copper-infused yarn, is being widely used in fabric to make clothes, bedding sheets, eye masks and braces. These**products, which are also manufactured by Fine Cotton Factory using the CuTEC yarn, are being marketed as having antimicrobial**and anti-inflammatory effects with plenty of testimonials to back these claims. However, solid scientific evidence and mechanistic**insights into how copper-infused yarn possesses anti-inflammatory effects remains lacking. The proposed project will examine the**anti-inflammatory effects of fabric knit from copper-infused yarn and elucidate the underlying mechanisms through which copper**might be mediating its anti-inflammatory properties. Several pro-inflammatory intracellular pathways will be triggered in immune**cells that have been exposed to CuTEC yarn-knit fabric. Pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines will be measured and**activation of these inflammatory pathways will be evaluated. These studies will provide robust scientific evidence to confirm or**refute potential anti-inflammatory properties of copper infused fabric, determine the proportion of CuTEC yarn that is needed to**provide any potential anti-inflammatory benefits, and provide important mechanistic insights for these effects.
