Breweries such as Beaus All Natural Brewing Company conventionally generate three to ten times the volume of wastewater**relative to the volume of beer produced. The generated wastewater can be highly variable and complex in nature, making the**treatment of the wastewater difficult. The high variability of the wastewaters resulting from various brewing processes and cleaning**cycles along with the overall elevated carbonaceous content of brewery wastewaters requires operational modifications to be**linked to production and cleaning cycles in order to meet strict municipal sewer discharge limits. This project proposes to develop**the novel information necessary to efficiently operate Beaus biofilm based treatment system, to effectively treat a complex**brewery wastewater and to link the operation of the system to Beaus brewing and cleaning cycles to optimize performance and**efficiency of treatment. Furthermore, the research proposes to develop new information pertaining to the brewery wastewater**treatment biofilm using advanced microscopy, microbiological and molecular methods. The new information gained via these**advanced analytical tests will provide an indication of whether the strategy will likely be successful long term or not by showing the**effects of the applied operational strategy on the stability and structure of the biofilm. Hence, the proposed innovative findings of**the project will provide Beaus with long term operational strategies that are required for their economical, small land footprint,**modern biofilm treatment system that enhances waste reuse and recovery. Further the research will directly position Beau's to**meet their current discharge regulations and increase their beer production.**
