This project is the first collaboration between Gorbet's Material Interactions with Biological Systems lab and**NERv, a startup company, developing an implantable device to monitor post-surgical complications. This**6-month project aims to develop a set of in vitro models allowing NERv to investigate mechanisms involved in**biosensor and device biocompatibility as well as develop a strategy to ensure the long term biocompatibility**and performance of their implantable device.**There is currently limited research available on the biocompatibility of nanomembrane materials and how**combining various materials to hold and seal an implantable monitoring device will impact cell response. This**project aims to develop in vitro models to investigate the response of blood cells (platelets and leukocytes) and**macrophages to the NERv biosensing membrane as well as encapsulating and sealant materials alone or in**combination and determine the mechanisms involved in cell activation and the impact of combining various**materials.**The knowledge created will be key to NERv's product development and sensor performance testing. This R&D**project will contribute to the success of NERv, and will result in the creation of new jobs and training**opportunities in nanotechnology and biomedical engineering in Ontario.
