With the massive industrial development of high definition screens for mobile applications, organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) have become a very mature technology. Nevertheless, several high-end challenging issues still remain unsolved. Long-term objective of the program is to push OLED technology beyond today's limits. That is to build and demonstrate direct injection organic lasers, organic room temperature emitters of single photons on demand and circular light emitting diodes. ****The achievement of injection lasing in organic diodes is currently a hot topic in the field of organic electronics. A dozen of leading groups in the world are actively searching for the conditions to reach injection lasing in organic semiconductors. The potential of plasmonics for lasers is currently explored by several teams in Canada and abroad. The potential of plasmonics in organics for single photon and polarization tailored OLEDs has not yet been fully recognized. It is expected that the present research program will open new avenues for research and technological development in these fields. If successful the program will rapidly become economically self-sustainable owing to its expected strong impact on information technologies. With appropriate intellectual property protection, it will stimulate the creation of new startups in the field of sensors, quantum information and displays in Canada. Organic electronic devices are easy to process and to integrate into other products. All the electronic industry will benefit from the innovations of our program, in a similar manner as when stable room temperature blue laser diodes were developed about 20 years ago.****Shorter term, publishable objectives of the program are: to develop rare-earth complex functionalized luminescent silica core-shell nanoparticles; to develop quarter and half-wave thick OLEDs; to develop distributed feedback grating coupling structures; to characterize and model the devices under study. Research objectives were designed on the grounds of recent achievements obtain from previous discovery grant projects in the group. ****Six graduate students at the Master and Doctoral levels will work together under the program. They will study: rare earth phosphor functionalized core-shell nanoparticles; high-efficiency high-current vertical emitting OLEDs; chiral plasmonic grating out-coupling structures; continuous-wave stimulated emission and lasing in distributed feedback structures; single photon emission in OLEDs; injection lasing in distributed feedback plasmon-enhanced nanoparticle assisted OLEDs.**
