Workplace injuries still occur despite concerted efforts to avoid, minimize, and reduce their affect on the lives**and well being of Canadians. Of the types of injuries exhibited on job-sties, injuries to the upper extremities**(arms, shoulders, wrists, and hands) are of the most prevalent (second most occurring after injuries to the**trunk). The scope of the research to be performed in this work focuses on back of hand protection to reduce the**severity of impact-related workplace injuries through absorption of impact energy. The proposal addresses the**needs of Canadian companies to build technical knowledge about materials to enable innovation in use and**development of materials to improve product performance and secure market shares with competitive products**manufactured with intellectual property generated in Canada. Specifically, this research will characterize and**model the mechanical response of materials when impacted to simulate back of hand workplace injuries.**Impacts of the research will be realized in better understanding of the relationships between how materials**behave macroscopically under dynamic mechanical loads and how the molecular structures of materials**contribute to such response, so that new materials can be developed or selected using specialized knowledge.
