In Manitoba and elsewhere in Canada, there are many small communities where full-scale, conventional wastewater treatment plants will not be financially or operationally feasible for the foreseeable future. The Cattail Bio-Platform Harvesting SystemTM, invented by Winnipeg's Curry Industries Ltd., is an innovative structured growing bed for cattails to treat wastewaters passively in sewage lagoons prior to subsequent release into surface waters. The system has been designed to harvest the cattails when the plant is richest in phosphorous and nitrogen. The objective of this pilot project is to design and field-test a prototype in a wastewater environment (i.e. municipal lagoon) to optimize the coverage of the floating Cattail Bio-Platform Harvesting SystemTM for growing cattails and nutrient reduction, with potentially wider commercial applications. **This project potentially offers an innovative solution to treat wastewater naturally and passively by using cattails therefore allowing communities a more economical opportunity to meet and even exceed nutrient reduction standards. This project will also address Indigenous Involvement by providing a means of First Nations Communities to manage their wastewater systems naturally. There is potential for job creation in these communities to manage and harvest the cattail tissue. The reuse potential of harvested cattail tissue can also provide these communities with a composting fertilizer for agriculture bettering their economies. In addition, this project will increase Curry Industries Ltd's in-house technical knowledge, accelerate the development of new innovative production with strong scientific support and help them remain competitive in the world market. **********
