Power system real time simulators represent an essential and economical system for studying and designing power system networks, including in the context of power distribution and utilization. However, the power electronics model in modern real time digital simulators, e.g. RTDS, is only based on avenging and analytical approach, it does not provide high frequency switching behaviour of power electronics system in real time. Thus, it cannot simulate the actual dynamic behavior of power electronics converters in modern power systems such as the renewable energy converters in Microgrids. In this work, an investigation into the methodology of power system simulation associated with modern power electronics apparatus will be carried out for virtually simulating a Microgrid network with interfacing a physical converter. At the end of the project, an accurate, practical and reliable Microgrid simulating platform will be produced. The project will be in tight collaboration with the RTDS Technologies Inc. (the industrial partner of the project) and is based on their Real Time Power System Hardware-in-the-loop Simulator product, RTDS. The resultant platform of this research project will assist engineers in Utility Companies, such as Manitoba Hydro, with effective and rapid planning, design and research on future power Microgrids with power electronics apparatuses. It will also benefit the manufacturers of power electronics apparatuses, e.g. solar inverters, to evaluate the efficiency and grid connected behaviour of their products. Further, 1 PhD will be trained in the project. The HQP will learn cutting-edge technologies and will be able to contribute to the Canadian Power and Energy industry in the future.
