The proposed research program of Inorganic Materials for Transformative Technologies (IMTT), aims at developing new ways to create and implement novel efficient functional materials in different sectors, such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Defence and Security, by leveraging the convergence of several materials-centric cornerstones: magnetics, optics In the ICT focused research, advanced characterization of novel molecular (Nanomagnets) and low-dimensional materials (Quantum Spin Liquids), manipulation at the nanoscale, device development and assessment, as well as quantum theoretical aspects will support the design and synthesis of new materials for low power electronics, increased computing speeds and efficient data storage. *** To protect Canadians and the environment from hazardous chemicals, carefully designed Metal-Organic Frameworks will be developed for safe capture, storage and disposal of highly toxic and explosive materials. This research is ideal for interdisciplinary collaboration between HQP with Department of National Defence and industry to create smart protective materials that will contribute to the wellbeing of Canadians, from environmental and health benefits to security.***Overall, the IMTT research is based on some of the fundamental discoveries and theories that are at the forefront of research today, as evidenced by the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Nano-Machines-Smart materials) and in Physics (unusual phases, or states of matter such as superconductivity and magnetism in molecular and low-dimensional materials). This is at the crux of this proposal, which aims to realize these materials for future applications in defense, the internet of things and data storage.
