L'industrie du traitement des eaux usées subit une transformation majeure en se concentrant sur la revalorisation des matières résiduelles des eaux usées au lieu de simplement traiter les eaux usées. L'énergie est une ressource importante qui peut être récupérée des eaux usées et plusieurs installations désirent un mode de fonctionnement énergétiquement neutre. L'élimination des biosolides est une dépense opérationnelle majeure, car elle peut utiliser jusqu'à 60% d'un budget annuel des installations. L'objectif du présent projet est de régler ce problème tout en minimisant la production de biosolides et en maximisant les rendements de biométhane. Pour atteindre cet objectif, les boues activées seront prétraitées par ozonation, pour améliorer leur dégradabilité et seront utilisées dans la digestion anaérobie tout en exploitant les digesteurs anaérobies en mode psychrophile (température inférieure à 20 °C). Selon des résultats initiaux, le traitement à l'ozone permet le fonctionnement du digesteur anaérobie psychrophile à des taux élevés, ce qui correspond à un temps de rétention des solides inférieur ou égale à 20 jours. Ainsi, malgré la diminution du coût d'opération, le fonctionnement des digesteurs sera similaire aux conditions typiques en mode mésophile. La dégradabilité améliorée des boues activées permettra d'augmenter significativement la capacité de traitement, ce qui pourra réduire les investissements en capital pour les installations de traitement des matières résiduelles provenant des eaux usées. Ce nouveau procédé sera le premier de ce genre où l'action d'hydrolyse de l'ozone sera utilisée pour réduire la température de fonctionnement du digesteur et augmenter directement la sortie de biogaz tout en maintenant un relativement faible temps de rétention. Ce projet sera présenté conjointement au RDA et RDC du CRSNG par le CNETE, centre de transfert technologique du Collège Shawinigan, et l'Université McGill. Le nouveau procédé mis au point par le projet proposé permettra à la compagnie Air Liquide et à ses partenaires de commercialiser leur technologie dans le domaine de la digestion anaérobique, et d'offrir des avantages économiques et environnementaux importants pour l'industrie canadienne de récupération des eaux.
