The central goal of this research is to reduce emission in transportation vehicles. Transportation vehicles account for close to 30% of air pollution in Canada. An active approach to reduce this pollution is electrification of vehicles. All major automotive manufacturer are planning to move toward electric vehicle and/or a mixture of electric and internal combustion hybrid vehicles. These emerging vehicles bring with them new design challenges that, in part, stems from new materials that are less known to automotive industry. Electrical steel is among those materials that are used in rotors and stators, main components of electrical engines. Due to the favorable magnetic properties, i.e., low iron loss and high permeability, electrical steels are preferred steel material widely used in construction of electrical engines. These steels come in the form of very thin sheets that are stacked to form a rotor or stator frame. Knowledge of their mechanical properties in the form of sheets and stacked laminates are of principal importance in design and manufacturing of electric engines and their long term durability. The proposed research studies the material and mechanical characteristics of a single sheet and stacked laminates under quasi-static and cyclic loads at room and elevated temperatures.
