Frontiers of Quantum Matter On-a-Chip! Our strategic vision is to apply designer's materials and fabrication to the grand challenge of quantum physics, to contribute to the advancement of Canadian excellence and leadership in the burgeoning field of 'tailor-made' quantum matter, and to go beyond the current existing paradigms. i) Beyond Bose and Fermi: Developing thermodynamics 'on-a-chip' [PRB 95, 201306R (2017)] and narrow-band noise measurements [PRL 120, 136801 (2018)], our group has recently measured the entropy *in absolute units* for the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state. Over the course of this coming DG funding, we will be tackling the grand challenge of determining whether it possesses the conjectured non-abelian entropy, a clear signature of a topological state carrying non-Abelian braiding quantum statistics. ii) Beyond bulk matter: Our research group has tackled the grand challenge of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory for the one-dimensional quantum liquid, and made important progress over the last few years in both an electronic [Science 343, 631 (2014)] and fluidic [Science Advances 1, e1400222 (2015)] system. Over the course of this coming DG funding cycle, we will be tackling the grand challenge of thermoelectricity in 1D (in the same electronic model system) so as to experimentally show the expected breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law, as well as establishing "algebraic superfluidity" in a neutral system, as envisioned early on by Haldane. iii) Beyond graphene: Our research group has gone "beyond graphene" and we have been the first (simultaneously with another team in China) to report quantum oscillations in black phosphorus, or "phosphorene" [Nature Communications 6, 7702 (2015)]. Over the course of this coming DG funding cycle, we will be tackling the grand challenge of "antimonene" (Sb) and "bismuthene" (Bi) within a transistor geometry, in an effort to establish their solid-state properties. iv) Beyond low-energy condensed matter physics: Building on years of experiences with fabrication of devices and tailoring 'quantum matter on-a-chip', over the course of this coming DG funding cycle our group will be tackling the grand challenge of finding a supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum phase by proximity coupling of a superconductor with a topological insulator, as predicted by Affleck et al. To achieve this, we propose to merge the thermodynamic measurements discussed in i) and to search for a clear thermodynamic signature of SUSY in solid state physics.
