New-age smart technologies necessitates the deployment of large number of sensors connected via Internet of things (IoT). Seamless deployment of IoT demands communication devices that can support large data loads at high speed. Thus, efficient photonic sensors and detectors with large and tunable bandwidths are required to meet the market demands for Canada's Smart transformation. Here, we propose to develop novel two dimensional (2D)- transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) based photonic devices and sensors exploiting the unique carrier transport properties of this class of materials. 2D-TMD materials show excellent optoelectronic properties that will be utilized for the development of high-performance photonic detectors using a resonance-based approach. To develop the proposed photonic detectors, the University of Calgary team will collaborate with the "nanomaterial growth and nanofabrication laboratory" from the Stevens Institute of Technology. The US collaborators have great expertise in the development of emerging 2D materials, including 2D-TMDs, that will contribute significantly to the fabrication of our envisioned photonic devices. The UofC team has expertise in electronic characterization of such exotic 2D materials. The project will synergize the expertise of the teams and make a roadmap for Canada to participate in the global photonics market that can have broad collaborative and technology translational opportunities. This collaboration will foster diverse HQP training with equity, diversity, and inclusion frameworks in mind. By exploring this new class of materials, potential new technologies that can garner a transformative opportunity to make Canada a part of the cutting-edge global photonics industry. This technology can also extend to other manufacturing processes and possibly enable new commercialization opportunities such as in 'imaging-sensors'. The research will benefit Canada by the training of new HQPs with a variety of professional and technical skills.
