SGER: The Formation of the Chinese Scientific Elite

This study takes advantage of the 1997 election of new members to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, to examine the criteria and processes used to elect members and the changing nature of elite formation in Chinese science. Using observation, interviews with members, and documentary analysis, the project will assess the career characteristics, professional orientations, policy roles, and generational dynamics of China's scientific elite. The investigators hypothesize that this group has an increasingly important role in setting the values and directions for Chinese science.
