The principle aim of this project is to show how oscillatory brain activity in motor cortex is related to vocal fold and articulator dynamics during the planning of intonational phrases. The planned research consists of several MEG experiments using an event-related language production paradigm. Using well-established source reconstruction techniques, the project will attempt to establish the timing, connectivity, and localization of alpha (8-10 Hz) and beta band (12-30 Hz) activity originating in facial and laryngeal motor cortex in response to intonational speech planning. A second aim is to establish whether separate glottal source and articulatory filter representations can be recovered with source reconstruction.
