Aufgrund der allgemeinen demographischen Entwicklung erhalten Fragen der kognitiven Leistungsfähigkeit im Alter immer mehr an Relevanz. Eine Vielzahl von kognitiven Funktionen zeigt altersabhängige Veränderungen, wobei sich auch vielfältige Abhängigkeiten zwischen diesen Funktionen zeigen können. So wird angenommen, dass Verschlechterungen in Aufmerksamkeitsleistungen unter anderem zu Problemen in Gedächtnisleistungen führen können. Aufmerksamkeitsleistungen wiederum sind stark von motivationalen Faktoren abhängig. Obwohl dies ein alltagsbekanntes Phänomen ist, sind die genauen neuronalen Prozesse bisher weitgehend ungeklärt. Das hier beantragte Projekt beschäftigt sich mit der Frage der neurophysiologischen Grundlagen der Interaktion zwischen Aufmerksamkeit und Motivation und deren Modulation im Alter. Es wird mittels neurophysiologischer Methoden (fMRT und EEG) untersucht, wie effektiv Belohnungen (d. h. Motivationsprozesse) bei älteren im Vergleich zu jüngeren Probanden Aufmerksamkeitsprozesse wirken und wie dies neurophysiologisch vermittelt wird. Anforderungen an die Aufmerksamkeitsleistung sowie der Grad der Motivation werden dabei laborexperimentell variiert, so dass das Zusammenspiel beider Faktoren bei jungen und alten Personen erfasst und miteinander verglichen werden kann.
