The aim of the planned project is to broaden the understanding of how perception - action processing is modulated in GTS with special emphasis on theoretical concepts suggesting that gain control mechanisms are altered in these patients. To this end, the project uses a multi-modal approach and is based on the Theory of Event coding. It integrates psychophysiological (EEG) data acquired during experiments assessing event file processing with concomitantly recorded pupil diameter data and measurements of soluable alpha amylase levels. During these experiments, active or sham atVNS is applied in adolescents (tested in Dresden) and adults (tested in Lübeck) with GTS and matched TDC. The project will provide mechanistic evidence of how atVNS affects clinical features, particularly tic frequency and severity, and alters perception - action integration in patients with GTS. In addition to shedding light on the pathophysiology of GTS, results of this study will thus also provide insights into whether atVNS might be a possible treatment option in GTS. The project thus connects basic cognitive and clinical neuroscience.
