Ständig stehen uns hunderte von Reaktionsalternativen offen und wir können nahezu anstrengungslos aus diesen Reaktionsoptionen die momentan wesentliche auswählen und unser Verhalten organisieren. Die Frage, wie wir es schaffen zwischen Reaktionsalternativen auszuwählen und wieso wir manchmal zu „Multitasking“ in der Lage sind und manchmal nicht, ist trotz der alltäglichen Relevanz dieser Prozesse unbeantwortet. In Anstrengungen zur Klärung dieser Fragen dominiert bisher ein „kortikozentrischer Bias“, so dass neurobiologische Befunde, welche die Bedeutung der Basalganglien für diese Prozesse unterstreichen, wenig Berücksichtigung in der kognitivneurowissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung finden. Im Rahmen dieses Projektes wird eine Integration von theoretischer Neurobiologie der Reaktionsselektion in den Basalganglien und der Experimentalpsychologie angestrebt. Dazu wird auf neurobiologische Parameter eines wesentlichen, theoretischen Modells zur Reaktionsselektion in Basalganglien mittels mehrerer Strategien zugegriffen und die Reaktionsauswahl anhand von Paradigmen der experimentellen Psychologie untersucht, die eine Manipulation von Reaktionsauswahlprozessen auf einem „Seriell-Parallel-Kontinuum“ erlauben.
