Nanoscale Dynamic Analysis of Surface Properties of BiopolymersGrand CMS-0528506AbstractThe longevity of joint implants and the efficiency of catheterizationtechniques greatly depend on fundamental understanding of the dynamicsurface properties of polymers used in these applications. The motivationof this research is to bridge the gap of knowledge of the dynamic responseof biopolymer surfaces. The research consists of the following main tasks:(a) gamma-irradiation and plasma-assisted surface modification ofmedical-grade polyethylenes, (b) characterization of the surface topographyand chemical behavior of the treated polymers, and (c) investigation of thedynamic behavior of both unmodified and treated polymers using dynamicforce microprobe analysis. The significance of this research is the basicinsight into nanoscale surface phenomena of biopolymers with directimplications in biomedical applications.
