0602957HeThe project proposes to develop a novel non-ionizing, cost effective and high resolution imaging modality for imaging electrical impedance by integrating ultrasound with electromagnetism (Magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction or MAT-MI). The specific aims are to: 1) develop theoretical foundations for MAT-MI imaging, and novel image reconstruction algorithms for high-resolution imaging of electrical impedance within biological tissue; 2) conduct well-controlled computational simulation studies to evaluate and test the performance of MAT-MI in reconstruction of electrical impedance from the acoustic signals; 3) develop a novel 3-D MAT-MI system for imaging electrical impedance in biological tissues; and 4) conduct well-controlled experimental studies to assess the feasibility of MAT-MI to obtain high resolution images of electrical impedance.
