Analytical Studies Using Organized Media

Professors Isiah Warner and Robert Strongin of Louisiana State University are supported by the Analytical and Surface Chemistry Program in the Division of Chemistry to synthesize and characterize organized media for analytical measurements, primarily in the areas of separation science and chiral molecular recognition. In particular, the research will examine the molecular recognition capabilities of molecular micelles, ionic liquids and resorcinarenes. The goal of this project is to better understand organized media at the molecular level, and to use this knowledge to exploit the advantages of such systems for use as fluorescence sensors, and separation reagents in capillary electrophoresis and capillary high performance liquid chromatography. This project has the potential to lead to the next generation of materials used for chiral separations. The research will also result in new methods of analysis with important applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Additionally, the investigators will have a significant impact on the mentoring of minority students and will have an important impact on society through the development of human resources and improved analytical separation methods.
