MiltonDMS-0629032 The investigator and colleagues organize the seventh in aseries of international conferences on the electrical, transport,and optical properties of inhomogeneous media. Previous oneswere held in Ohio (1977), Paris (1987), Guanajuato, Mexico(1993), St. Petersburg-Moscow (1996), Hong Kong (1999), andSnowbird, Utah (2002). These conferences have provided a forumfor experimentalists and theorists to discuss the electromagneticand elastic properties of inhomogeneous media, now often calledmetamaterials. ETOPIM7 brings together a diverse group ofscientists, enginneers and mathematicians to report on leadingresearch in these areas, to identify common themes and solutionsthat thread through a variety of problems, and to point the wayfor promising future research. The electrical transport and optical properties ofcomposites and inhomogeneous media are of fundamental importanceto a broad range of highly interdisciplinary problems throughoutscience and engineering. Nanocomposites, metamaterials, photoniccrystals and band gap structures, design of novel composites (andas discovered recently, some with the predicted ability to cloakor make objects invisible), imaging in geophysical, medical andindustrial applications, the role of sea ice microstructural andoptical properties in polar biology and climate, and defenseapplications, are all examples of topics that this conferencecovers. The grant supports US junior researchers and USresearchers from underrepresented groups to participate inETOPIM7. This strengthens the level of cross-disciplinaryexpertise in the US, allows these researchers to present theirfindings to an international audience, facilitates interactionsbetween junior US researchers and senior researchers in differentfields, and gives women and minorities the opportunity tostrengthen their contacts and present their work.
