McLaughlinDMS-0852516 The investigator and her collagues organize a series of fiveworkshops in five different application areas of inverseproblems. All of the represented fields are advancing rapidlyand in all cases the mathematical advances, the engineeringadvances and the new experiments enabled by new technology orinnovative ideas combine together to make a rich opportunity fornew research projects at the interface of disciplines. It isexpected that research projects will be inspired, and in somecases be newly developed, as a result of the workshops. Thepresentations include state of the art techniques in mathematicalsciences and engineering; an important addition in some of theworkshops is the inclusion of experimentalists who describe theirlatest advances, the data sets that are obtained from thoseexperiments, and their anticipated results from that data. Earlycareer participants, including a strong representation ofparticipants from underrepresented groups, are targeted. TheInverse Problems Center, IPRPI, provides an ideal environment tohold these workshops. The problem areas being targeted all impact quality of lifeand safety of individuals. Two of the workshops specificallytarget medical imaging; one is in imaging of biomechanical tissueproperties, a new, very fast moving area with significant successanticipated, and another considers diffusion optical tomography,which also has a great deal of promise. Successes in these twoareas significantly impact human health. Two other workshopsemphazize identification in geosystems and waveform tomography. Both target understanding the effects of earthquake dynamics, aswell as the identification of new energy sources. As such, thesafety of individuals and quality of individual life is stronglyaffected. Finally, the microlocal analysis workshop emphasizes abroad set of application areas, including radar imaging, which isan important homeland security component. Much of the grantsupports participants who are students, postdocs, junior faculty,women, and other under-represented groups.
