The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research inMathematics (ICERM) is a new Institute. Its mission is to supportand encourage research in the mathematical sciences with athematic focus on the fruitful interplay between mathematics andcomputers, explored and developed through computation andexperimentation. ICERM will accomplish these goals through avariety of programs and activities. The Institute will run onelarge research program per semester, with each program focusingon a particular subtopic that aligns with the generaltheme. Program participants will range from graduate students tosenior researchers. During the summers, the Institute will hostadditional programs for postdoctoral scholars and early careerresearchers, as well as for undergraduates selected from anational pool.ICERM will be a novel institute in an area of growingimportance. An Institute in computational and experimentalmathematics has the potential to cut across disciplines withinand beyond mathematics and statistics. The Institute programswill strongly emphasize training and retaining graduate studentsand postdoctoral scholars in the mathematical sciences community.ICERM's leadership has substantial experience in supporting andworking with underrepresented groups in the mathematicalsciences, and Institute programming will provide newopportunities for underrepresented students and scholars. ICERMhas already initiated partnerships with leading research intensecompanies and national research laboratories, and effective plansto nurture these partnerships will help to sustain a rich anddeep interaction with the broader research community.
