Founded in 2012 with the support of a DFG start-up grant, the Open Access International Journal of Literary Linguistics aims at providing a high quality free online forum for the dissemination of original and innovative research at the interface of linguistics and literary studies. The journal has developed out of a longstanding research initiative by University of Mainz professors Anja Müller-Wood (English Literature and Culture) and Anneli Sarhimaa (Linguistics), notably the Graduate Research Group Literary Linguistics they have jointly been directing since 2010. The IJLL is influenced by the “cognitive turn” that has been shaping Humanities research during the past two decades in a variety of ways; however, the journal aims at engaging critically with this trend by providing a publication outlet for new and/or non-mainstream perspectives in literary linguistics that remain underrepresented in the field. The journal is edited by an editorial team consisting of three persons based in Mainz and supported by an international advisory board consisting of scholars that have contributed to literary linguistic research in their different disciplines or represent scholarly fields that are relevant for the further development of literary linguistics (especially cognitive and socio-semiotic and narratological and cultural studies methods respectively). The main task of the partnership between editors and advisory board is quality control. Submissions are either reviewed by members of the advisory board or by suitable scholars suggested by the board. On the basis of these reviews, the editors decide whether a submission will be published or not, or ask for revisions. Board members also help advertise the journal in their own professional circles and communities. This double blind peer review process is facilitated by the publishing software Open Journal Systems (OJS) that is employed for this publication, which regulates the editorial workflow from the point of submission to the publication of articles. OJS also offers a number of plug-ins enabling the long-term archiving of published materials, which have been configured (as far as this is possible within the framework provided by OJS) for the specific purposes of the IJLL. The editors receive technical support from the Center for Digital Systems (CeDis), Freie Universität Berlin (journal design, hosting and general assistance) and GESIS (distribution of DOIs, long-term archiving, harvesting and providing of metadata). With the aid of the expansion grant hereby applied for the editors intend productively to continue the efforts undertaken during the first phase of DFG-support, with a particular focus on enhancing the journal’s scholarly profile and extending its readership, finalising the measures already undertaken with view to digital preservation and solving the problem of the journal’s long-term continuation.
