The Sanctuary of Asclepius at Pheneos - Excavation, Reconstruction and its Context in the History of Architecture

The Sanctuary of Asclepios was excavated by E. Protonotariou-Deilaki between 1958 and '64, but never fully published. In 2011 studies started in cooperation with the Greek Archaeological Service to catalogue and to publish the finds and the architecture, based on the results of the old excavation. It was possible to distinguish ten differend phases of the area, beginning in MH and ending in late Roman times. The sanctuary itselfs has five different phases, The main phase belongs into the second half of the 2nd century b.c. It was build as a terraced sanctuary with a a tree-sides peristyle and three rooms at the west wing. Although it has been possible to reconstruct the architecture in general, including the polychromy of the architecture and the cult group, very important questions about the architecture and the phases are still not answered. With the continuation of the project, not only these questions shall be aswered by excavations, but based on them, confirmed conclusions can be made about architectural quotations of architecture from the main centres of the hellenistic world (e.g. Kos).
