The New Testament scholars of the Catholic Tübingen School in the 19th century with a specific consideration of the work of Paul von Schanz

During the biennial stage of funding (2009-2011) the project examined the Professors of New Testament Studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the University of Tübingen in the 19th century. In a first step of this stage of funding the biographical and bibliographical informations were gathered and in a second step the life and the work of these scholars were surveyed. Therefore the project analyzed the printed work as well as the handwritten lecture notes of the scholars. The new project will continue the work that has been done and has its focus now on topics that the writings of the scholars had in common. The following topics will be covered:1) The discourse of the Tübingen New Testament scholars with their Protestant counterparts especially with the Younger Tübingen School (Protestant);2) The discourse of the Catholic Theology with the historical Jesus research as denominational problems of a genre;3) The aporia of the method: Anti-judaism and historical criticism;4) The consensus patrum as a hermeneutical problem for the historical-critical exegesis within the 19th century.These four topics are specific to the scientific approach of the Tübingen scholars especially to Paul von Schanz who is the key figure at the end of the investigation period. The results of the first funding phase, that had a focus on the authors themselves, are the foundation for the second funding phase, that will use these results with a focus on the above-mentioned topics. The results of the second funding phase will not only recover a part of the comprehensive history of exegesis and theology in the 19th century but will also illuminate the challenging discussions of the catholic biblical exegesis of the 20th century.
