本研究では、第二言語 (L2) による産出能力の主要な測定領域の一つである「複雑性」の発達を反映する言語特徴および下位概念構造の変遷を詳細に記述し、体系化することを目的に次の3つの研究課題を設定した。(1) 低熟達度から高熟達度になるにつれて、隣接する熟達度の学習者間の言語使用の差異を特徴づける言語特徴とはどのようなものか。(2) 熟達度の変化に伴い、測定に使用する言語特徴間の関係はどのように変化していくか。(3) 特定の言語特徴同士により構成される複雑性の下位概念構造は、熟達度の変化とともにどのように変容していくか。それぞれの研究課題について、大規模学習者コーパス EFCAMDATに収録されている日本語母語話者による英作文データを用い、複雑性言語指標を用いた機械学習による英作文の書き手の熟達度分類および熟達度ごとの英作文から得られる言語指標値に基づく相関分析、ネットワーク分析により、以下の通りの結果を得た。(1) について、発達の初期には、従属節の増加と主節動詞の多様化が見られ、中級への発達過程で法助動詞および前置詞句による名詞句の後置修飾の増加が見られ、上級となると、受動態や非定形節補部、副詞的前置詞句の使用の増加が確認された。(2) および (3)について、発達の初期段階においては、主節動詞の相対頻度と形容詞補部、名詞補部の頻度に強い相関が見られ、頻度の高い動詞とシンプルな文型からなる言語使用が中心となる。中級に移行するにつれて、動詞の相対頻度と形容詞補部との相関は減少し、修飾語句を伴う直接目的語との相関が顕著になった。また、上級では動詞頻度と文型だけではなく、名詞句修飾要素の量と文型の多様性との間の相関も見られた。以上から、複雑性の下位概念として設定される、言語使用の洗練性と多様性との関係は熟達度が上昇するにつれ、より強固に検出されるようになることが明らかとなった。
