项目摘要

外国人による叙述や画像という表象物を、無批判に客観的事実を示す史料として利用することは問題ではないか？〟、〝必ずしも正確な事実を伝えていない表象物、すなわち「虚像」によって欧米における日本観は形成されているのではないか？〟―これが本研究の核心をなす学術的「問い」である。この「問い」に応えるべく、本研究は、文字史料を中心に、対象とする時代や学術分野を問わず進められてきたこれまでの日本観研究に対し、画像史料を歴史史料として利用する新たな方法を提示することを目的としている。3年計画の2年目にあたる本年度は、データベースの充実を図るとともに、主に横浜・横須賀周辺地域を描いた画像の検証を行った。昨年度に引き続き、COVID-19の影響により、現地調査を計画通り進めることはできなかったが、横浜・金沢周辺、函館、浦賀、久里浜の現地調査を実施し、画像との比較を通して、ハイネの描いた絵の虚構性について検討した。特に、浦賀、久里浜調査では、現地の専門家の案内により、研究協力者とともに調査を行い、議論を深めた。ただし、当初１年目に計画していた沖縄における現地調査を本年度も実施することができなかったため、来年度に延期することとした。そのため、画像の分析も現地調査にもとづかない状況のままである。また、昨年度同様、歴史理論及び方法論に関する文献を精読し、本研究への応用を図った。なお、研究成果の公表については、学会報告の準備を実施した。2023年6月に大韓民国国立慶北大学（大邱）で開催される第8回Association for Asian Studies in Asiaで報告することが許可された。本研究の成果の一部を、Vew of Japan and Asia in the Illustrations of Perry's Expeditoinとして報告を行う予定である。
