2022年度には、日本企業の大規模なパネルデータセットを用い、企業間取引関係の状態とマークアップの相関について実証的な分析を行った。具体的には、経済産業省企業活動基本調査の2007～2018年の調査票データをもとに、企業のマークアップが上流の取引相手（調達元）・下流の取引相手（販売先）の数とどのような関係にあるかを見ている。取引相手数のデータは、東京商工リサーチの企業間取引データより得ている。これらは経済産業研究所（RIETI）の協力によって入手したデータである。主要な推定結果としては、上流の取引相手が多いほど、企業のマークアップは低いという関係が製造業・非製造業ともに見られ、また下流の取引相手が多いほど、企業のマークアップは高いという関係が、製造業のみについて見られている。これらの結果は、企業規模や企業年齢、産業固有の効果、年固有の効果などをコントロールした上で得られたものである。日本企業のマークアップの推移については、他の主要国とは異なる傾向が見られるところ、本研究ではその背後にある要因について、企業間取引関係の状態を含む大規模企業パネルデータセットを用いて迫っている点に特色がある。現時点までに得られた結果については、必ずしも因果関係を見たものではないが、各企業が企業間の取引ネットワークの中で置かれている位置・状態により、マークアップの水準が異なるという相関関係までは見出されている。産業内の新陳代謝や、コロナ禍による廃業など、企業数はさまざまな要因によって変化し、それに伴い各企業の取引相手の数も変化しうる。そのような変化が企業のマークアップにどのような影響を及ぼすのかは、今後の日本企業全体のマークアップの推移にも重要な意味を持つと考えられる。本研究はその点への貢献が期待できる。
