日本的経営の形成過程を再検討を進めるために、日産自動車の事例を特に取り上げ、その戦後復興期の労使関係と労務管理の施策の展開について検討した。その中でも注目したのは労働組合が取り組んだ生産復興運動（闘争）である。職員主導で工職混合組合となった日産労組は、経営者を含めた従業員共同体という意識を涵養し、生産復興を通じた企業再建を目指すことになった。会社側もこれに協力する姿勢を示していたが、1947年7月に政府が業種別平均賃金を示したことから、次第に労使の対立が激しくなってきた。組合としては従業員共同体として雇用保障と生活できる賃金の確保を強く求めたが、会社はそれに応えなくなってきて、共同体意識が揺らぐことになった。しかし、それでも組合は生産復興路線を追及した。1949年の経済九原則においては、企業整備が必至であるとの判断の下、組合は防衛闘争を唱えるようになる。厳しいながらも賃上げ要求を取り下げ、職場闘争の一環として残業代削減の取り組みを進めた。危機のなかで雇用を守るために企業再建への姿勢を明確にしたのである。残業削減は、職場闘争としての取り組みから労使の協同作業へと発展させ、大幅な残業時間および残業代の削減に成功する。また労使協同作業として市場調査を実施した。組合としては生産復興路線を、この労使協同作業に引き継がせる心積もりであった。しかし、人員整理案を提案し強行したのである。会社が共同体であることを希求していたのは組合の側であって、経営側ではなかった。雇用保障についても、生活を保障する賃金についても会社は従業員を信頼させるようなイデオロギーを発しえていないのである。企業存続のために経営合理性を対置し、拒絶したのである。少なくとも1950年以前に長期雇用や年功処遇といった観念を経営側は提示していなかったことが明らかになった。
