本研究は，「メタ認知的方略」を美術教育の教授システムに組み込んだ学習モデルの開発と汎用化を目指すものである。「認知的方略」とは，知覚から認識全般に機能する「前向きな構え」であり，主体が「対象をどのように把握するのか」という「捉え方」を意味する概念である。本研究では特に美術表現において自己の認知的方略を自覚（メタ認知）することが豊かな表現や学びにつながることを検証するものである。第１年次においては概念の基本原理を構造化・図式化することを試みたが，第２年次ではその原理を踏まえながら題材開発と授業実践に取り組んできた。題材開発については認知活動の時系列における刺激と行為の循環を微視的・巨視的双方の視点から捉えながら推進した。微視的には，題材との出会いにおいて五感を刺激するような題材開発に焦点を当て，巨視的には既知の歴史的認識に対し新たな視点（美的な）を導入する鑑賞方法を提示した。授業実践は大学の講義で検証を行った上で幼稚園から中学校までの各段階で行い子どもの活動や反応を検証した。成果としては，いずれの発達段階においても感動（情緒的高揚）とメタ認知の相互作用によって積極的な創造活動が見られたこと，そしてそれぞれの実践に関わった共同研究者との共同執筆による発信等を行ったことが挙げられる。今回，題材開発として微視的な視点からは，「光の三原色」を用いたことによって自然素材の認知と表現行為の循環が「メタ認知的方略」の位相を図式化し，その効果を授業実践で検証することに成功したと言える。一方，巨視的視点として戦時下の子どもの眼差しを題材化する試みは日本において期待する反応を得ることはできたものの国際的な比較検証までは実施できなかった。最終年度への課題としたい。
