本研究において、当初より計画していた浜松市浜北区堀谷洞窟遺跡の発掘調査について、2021年度に実施した予備調査の結果を踏まえ、今年度は本調査に着手した。本調査に先立ち、年度前半は予備調査の続きを行い、調査可能な区域を判別したのち、調査許可申請等、事務的な手続きを完了し、１２月下旬に９日間の発掘調査を実施した。調査においては、テストピットを４地点設け、地層の確認および遺物の収集を行った。遺物は、自然遺物として動物骨片が多数出土し、文化遺物として焼き物や石器などの断片が計300点ほど収集されたが、どれも人為的な再堆積によるものであると思われ、様々な時代の遺物が混在している状況であったことから、縄文時代から江戸時代までの間のうち、かなりの長期間にわたって断続的に当洞窟が何らかの目的で使用された可能性が窺われた。いずれのテストピットも、元来の地層が観察される状況にはなく、現時点で学術的に重要と思われる遺物はほとんど見られなかったが、一部に精査する必要のある資料があった。まずは堆積物の下方が岩盤に到達するまでに元来の層が確認されることが重要であるが、まだその様子が窺えていないため、引き続き調査を行う必要がある。また、学術的価値に欠けるとしても遺物が多数得られていることは今後の調査につながる成果であるので、これら一つ一つの資料がどのようなものであるかを精査する必要がある。現在は、これらを整理・分類し、分析を進めている状況にある。
