项目摘要

本研究は研究期間内に、南インド・カナガナハッリ遺跡から出土した考古学的出土品に対して（１）現地調査を実施する他の仏教遺跡より出土した作例との比較から、（２）仏伝図の図像学的特徴から、（３）南インドの仏塔を装飾する文様から、（４）碑文の解読とその内容から分析を行い、南インドで受容された仏教の特色を明らかにするものである。令和4年度は（１）（２）（４）の研究を推進した。（１）については、新型コロナウイルス感染症の感染拡大による渡航制限処置に伴い令和2年度に延期し、令和3年度に再延期したサーンチー遺跡を中心とする中インド仏教遺跡での現地調査と資料収集を実施することができた。サーンチー遺跡ではとくに、研究資料の最も乏しい第2塔の実見と写真撮影に従事した。第2塔に80本ほどある欄楯柱は、その表裏に緻密な浮彫彫刻が施されているため、撮影には一日を費やしたが、今後（３）のアプローチを推進するための研究資料を収集することができた。その他には、サットダーラ遺跡、ウダヤギリ石窟群、ヴィディシャー考古博物館、ボーパール州立博物館、ニューデリー国立博物館において資料収集を行った。（２）（４）については、インド仏教の修行の一つに数えられる経行を取り上げ、その実践場所と図像表現を考察した。経行は一定の個処を往復歩行する実践であり、初期経典、仏伝文学、諸部派の律のほか、法顕や玄奘、そして義浄のインド旅行記にも記述があるにもかかわらず、その実態についてはこれまで積極的に考察されることはなかった。そこでカナガナハッリ大塔出土の祇園精舎布施図中に描かれる経行処の描写に着目し、碑文の内容と図像表現を分析したうえで、インド仏教における経行の実像を確かめることを目指した。研究成果は「インド仏教の図像表現にみられる経行処（cankrama）について」と題して研究発表を行った。
