本研究の目的は、少数言語の消滅リスクを推定するための指標、特に専門家や研究者だけでなく少数言語話者集団の当事者らが用いることができる評価指標を開発することである。指標の開発にあたっては、少数言語話者集団で混合調査法を用いた現地調査を行い、実際に消滅危機リスクを推定する。これらの研究活動を通じ、消滅危機リスクの推定に必要な評価項目や、言語移行を加速させる要因として重視すべき要因を考察するものである。しかし、2020年以降の新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の影響により、国内外での現地調査を進めることができず、研究計画の大幅な見直しを余儀なくされた。加えて、オンライン調査や2021年度後期に現地調査が可能だった鹿児島県沖永良部島においては、既に消滅危機リスクが当事者の間で認識され、地域言語の再活性化に向けた気運が高まっていることが明らかとなっていた。そこで、2022年度は沖永良部島を対象とした研究成果の社会還元に重点をおき、次のような活動を実施した。(1)島内の小学校における国際理解の出前授業（2021年度より継続）:研究代表者の専門分野でもあるタイ語を題材とし、他地域の言語・文化の多様性に触れることで、児童らが沖永良部島の言語・文化についても相対化して意識する機会を創出することを狙った。(2)地方自治体や関連組織と連携しての講演・勉強会:島内で教育に携わる人々や、言語習得期にある子供を持つ保護者らを対象に、研究代表者がこれまでに調査した東北タイにおける少数言語の状況等を紹介し、言語移行や再活性化に対する知見を深めてもらい、沖永良部における地域言語再活性化に関する意見交換を行った。(3)しまむに社会調査中間報告会:方言サミット開催に合わせ、これまでに実施したライフストーリーインタビュー調査の分析結果を、中間報告として、調査協力者やその関係者を対象に報告した。
