项目摘要

本研究は、太平洋戦争中に滞日し、日本と連合国との間で政治的立場を問われたラテンアメリカ日系留学生の戦中の経験、戦後の母国へ帰国後の経験を分析する。その上で、南北アメリカの日系人の戦争経験の語り・記述の多様性、記憶・継承の構造を再検討する。本年度の調査では、ブラジルとペルーの邦字新聞記事の分析より1930年代のブラジル、ペルー日系社会における日系子弟教育の議論、子弟の日本留学を推奨する言説を考察した。日本留学の背景を理解するため、各ホスト社会での排日運動の高まりへの懸念と子弟教育の必要性、さらに日本留学への期待の議論との関連性を検討した。また、戦中を日本で過ごし、戦後にブラジルへ帰国したブラジル日系学生らの日記や手記を収集し、そこにいかなるアイデンティティの葛藤がみられ、それがかれらの後の人生の歩みにどのように関わっていったのかを他の個人資料とも組み合わせながら分析してきた。次年度でかれらのライフヒストリーをまとめながら、ブラジルにおける戦前の日系子弟教育、日系留学生にとっての戦争経験の意味、かれらの戦後の日系社会、ブラジル社会での立場を明らかにしていく予定である。移民研究分野では戦前の日本への北米日系留学生や東アジア出身留学生について多くの研究蓄積があるものの、ラテンアメリカからの日系留学生についてはほとんど取り上げられてこなかった。個々のライフヒストリーを手がかりにラテンアメリカからの日系留学生の経験を分析していくことで、海外日系人の戦前の越境教育と日本・日本帝国勢力圏・南北アメリカの日本人移住先との間の学生の移動、かれらの戦後社会への関わり方をより包括的に理解することができると考える。
