本研究では、2000年頃から国連や国際競技団体で活発に議論されるようになった「開発と平和のためのスポーツ（Sport for Development and Peace: SDP）」に着目して、東京2020オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会を契機に日本政府が東南アジア10か国とスポーツを通じてジェンダー課題に取り組む上で、東南アジアの特にタイとマレーシアの政府関係者にタイとマレーシアのスポーツ現場でみられるジェンダー規範とジェンダー課題に対するスポーツの役割を調査することを目的としている。2022年度はよりジェンダー規範とスポーツの関係を深堀して調査するために、タイに研究国を絞り、２度のフィールドワークを実施した。１度目のフィールドワークでは、政府関係者や大学関係者を訪問して、資料収集や参与観察を実施して、２度目の本格的なフィールド調査に向けたパイロット調査を実施した。２つの大学に訪問し、女子学生アスリートや指導者とコミュニケーションを図り、本格調査の実施の可能性を探った。２度目のフィールで調査では、２大学に訪問し、女性アスリート26名に対して半構造化インタビューを実施。そのほか、参加型参与観察やフォーカスグループインタビューを実施した。
