This project aims to reveal how automatic and controlled aspects of learned biases of attention develop, interact, and come to determine our behaviour. How much control do we possess over what we attend to in our environment? Sometimes very little: significant features of our environment, such as signals of reward, can automatically capture attention. The project plans to apply a range of measures (eg eye-tracking; electroencephalography) in tasks designed to isolate these component processes of attention. The results may have important implications for current attentional theories of associative learning, and for clinical disorders known to feature attentional deficits.
