世界的に興隆するホームステイ及びこれを中核とした観光諸形態の動向に注目することで、開発途上国の農村部における観光開発に関する国際的な比較研究を行う。近年、農村観光、コミュニティ・ベイスト・ツーリズム、責任ある観光など様々な理念と形態のもとに、観光開発は途上国における農村開発の代替手法として採り入れられてきた。本研究は、ホームステイがそれら諸形態を通じて中核的な構成要素となってきたと措定し、東南アジアと南アジアの事例により横断的な分析を試みる。これまでの研究において、各国の農村部での観光開発おいて、ホームステイはひとつの中核的要素となっていることが確認された。バングラデシュではNGOが仲介役となって村民を組織化してホームステイのプログラムが試行され、スリランカでは地域コミュニティが主体的にホームステイに取り組んでいた。またタイやバングラデシュにおいては、地域コミュニティというよりも、特定の旅行会社と提携する個人が主体となってホームステイを運営する状況もみられた。さらにインドでは、宿泊施設そのものは旅行会社によるコテージであり、厳密にはホームステイには該当しないものの、食事の提供ほか、すべてのサービスを周辺の村人が担っている事例もみられた。これらのことから、ホームステイは農村部における観光開発の中核となっているものの、運営主体や形態は多様であることも判明した。また、コミュニティ主体のケースでは村民の理解度や継続性に課題がみられる一方で、旅行会社と提携した個人主体の運営においては、ある種のアントレプレナーシップが発揮されており、比較的順調に運営されているケースもみられた（ただし、利益の公平な配分の要素には欠ける）。このように、ホームステイを中核としながらも、それぞれの形態に応じた課題やメリットが存在していることが明らかとなり、さらなる研究を要することが確認された。
