The History of Jazz Music as Viewed Through its Piano Tradition

After substantial delay in commencing my U.S.-based research due to Covid, I was finally able to complete most of the research remaining on my book and have now finished the manuscript. I am currently reviewing the galley prints with my editor, and the book is expected to be published in fall 2023 by Iwanami Publishers. It will appear in two volumes and is expected to total 800-900 pages,including approximately 40 pages of endnotes.The book, written in Japanese, is entitled 『ジャズピアノ――その歴史から聴き方まで』(Jazz Piano: A History and Guide to Listening) and is aimed at both specialists and a general readership.To my knowledge, there is no comparably thorough study of the history of jazz piano available in any language.Nonetheless, I had to excise substantial portions of the manuscript that could not be included due to length restrictions, and I have begun writing a paperback edition that focuses on the modern jazz piano trio. This paperback book will include new research to be conducted in the U.S. in summer 2023 while incorporating parts of the original manuscript that will not appear in the hardback edition.
