ロマンス諸語の祖先であるラテン語は、欧米系の諸言語に大量の語彙を提供している。そうした語彙の語源研究は約200年の伝統を有する印欧語比較言語学の知見を土台としており、その恩恵を得て、かなりの数の語彙が正確な語源解釈を付されるに至った。他方、説明が不十分な語彙も相当数あり、印欧語研究の観点から特定の語根と関係付けられる場合でも、細部において疑いのある分析が施されていることも多い。印欧祖語の段階からラテン語が経験した音変化と帳尻を合わせるような方法論は、未だ素性の分からない語彙に一定の光を当てることにはなるが、使用例に基づく文献学的な考察が不十分なこともあり、表層的な解釈に終始するような先行研究も見られる。対象となる語彙がどのような文脈で使用されているのか、その背景にある文化的営みを見逃すことなく分析しなければ、説得力のある語源に到達することはできない。本件はデジタルコーパスの力を借りながら、十全な文献研究を礎とした成果に至ることを目標としている。2022年度は前年度に比べ、新型コロナウィルス感染症の勢いがやや減退したものの、研究活動を制限する要因の一つであった。そして、2021年度終盤に勃発したウクライナ危機は今なお世界状勢に暗い影を落としている。そうした中、不十分ながらも本研究を前に進めることができた部分もあった。上記の事情で2022年度は出席を断念した国際ラテン語学会が2023年度6月、チェコにて開催される予定であるが、審査を経て口頭発表の機会を得ることができた。「陶器」を意味するラテン語のtestaの語源を題材とした研究で、ロマンス諸語にも継承されている基本語彙であることから、関心を寄せてもらえるものと期待したい。また、ラテン語の動詞lugeo「（死を）悼む」の語源および形態分析に関する研究も大きく前進させることができ、刊行に至る最終段階に到達した。
